Summary
Romanian naturalization is for people already legally resident and integrated in Romania. It is separate from Romania's much more common descent and restoration pathways.
The ordinary route generally requires long residence, stable means, good conduct, Romanian-language ability, and knowledge of Romania's Constitution, anthem, culture, and civic life. Some categories, including spouses of Romanian citizens, may qualify with a shorter residence period.
Eligibility
- Lawful residence in Romania for the required period.
- Long-term or stable residence status at the time of filing.
- Good conduct and no serious criminal issues.
- Legal means of support.
- Romanian-language and civic-knowledge ability.
- Loyalty declaration and other formal requirements under Romanian citizenship law.
What This Route Allows
If approved, this route can lead to citizenship in Romania. Citizenship is the national status itself, not a residence permit: you can document the citizenship, apply for citizen identity or passport documents, and live in Romania without a separate immigration permit.
What This Route Is Not
This is not automatic citizenship. Naturalization, registration, and restoration routes usually require an application, supporting documents, and a decision by the relevant authority.
Next Steps
- Confirm whether your residence history meets the standard or spouse-based rule.
- Gather residence permits, address records, income records, and tax records.
- Prepare Romanian-language and civic-knowledge evidence.
- Collect civil and criminal-record documents.
- File through the Romanian citizenship authority process.
