Summary
Students in technical, university, or specialized programs can apply for temporary residence in El Salvador. The category also covers qualifying unpaid research and internships, with institutional evidence and documented financial support. Student residence does not itself lead to definitive residence under the student provision. A later change to a qualifying category needs its own application; do not count the study period as ordinary three-year settlement eligibility without confirmation.
The current instructions allow temporary student residence for up to a year at a time. Paid work compatible with the studies requires the employer’s supporting document and approval, so student status alone should not be treated as an open work permit.
-
Document the study or placement Obtain enrollment evidence or the institution's designation for qualifying research, internship, or exchange.
-
Document financial support Prepare the required sworn commitment explaining the payer, duration, and source of funds.
-
Complete the residence application Add personal records, authentication, translations, and any minor's authority documents.
Study remains the main activity. If paid work is planned, confirm and complete the compatible-work procedure before starting.
Eligibility
Confirmation from your institution
Provide enrollment evidence or confirmation of the enrollment process and start date. Research, internships, exchanges, or scholarship placements need the institution’s designation letter.
Proof of financial support
The financial supporter must explain the commitment, duration, and source of funds in the required sworn statement. A statement made abroad needs the prescribed authentication.
Study remains your main activity
F10 allows consideration of compatible part-time or contract-limited work with the required employer commitment. Do not start work merely because a study application has been filed.
Personal and family documents
Provide the valid passport, applicable foreign and Salvadoran police records, and any minor’s birth certificate and parental authority documents. Foreign records must meet authentication and Spanish-translation requirements.
What This Route Allows
Temporary student residence is granted for the approved period, up to one year under the current instructions. Compatible paid work requires the supporting employer document and approval.
What This Route Is Not
Student residence does not itself lead to definitive residence under the student provision. A later change to a qualifying category needs its own application; do not count the study period as ordinary three-year settlement eligibility without confirmation.
Next Steps
- Obtain the institution’s enrollment or placement confirmation and course dates.
- Arrange the required sworn financial-support statement.
- Gather your passport, background records, and any parental documents, with authentication and translations where required.
- Apply for student residence. If you need paid work, confirm the compatible-work process before accepting a start date.
