Summary
If a Taiwanese institution accepts you into a full-time degree program, you may be able to live in Taiwan while you study. You will need immigration approval as well as a place on the course.
The process involves a student resident visa and an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), Taiwan’s residence card for foreign residents. Working while you study requires separate permission.
Eligibility
This route covers full-time bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. You will generally need:
- Your admission notice and educational records, with official certification where required.
- Proof that you can cover tuition and living costs through your own funds, an accepted sponsor, or a scholarship. Ask the institution which amounts and documents apply.
- A health certificate, unless you qualify for an exemption.
Check that this foreign-passport application process applies to you. Republic of China (Taiwan) nationals and applicants from mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao may follow different rules. Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) lists passport restrictions and any special approvals needed.
Arriving as a visitor does not guarantee that you can apply for student residence inside Taiwan.
-
Confirm your course qualifies Ask the institution about admission, funding, and immigration documents.
-
Apply through the correct process Check passport rules and whether you must apply before traveling.
-
Complete your residence card After approval, apply for your ARC on time and follow the study and work conditions.
Admission, immigration approval, and permission for a student job are separate decisions.
What This Route Allows
You can live in Taiwan for your approved degree, for the period shown on your permission. Tell your institution if you change courses or stop attending.
To take a student job, you need a separate work permit and must follow its limits. Student residence alone does not give you unrestricted permission to work.
What This Route Is Not
This route does not cover a short exchange, an unapproved course, or the separate process for studying Mandarin.
Graduation does not automatically lead to permanent residence or permission to work. If you later take a professional job, you will need the appropriate work and residence approvals.
Next Steps
- Ask your institution to confirm that the course qualifies and to provide its immigration checklist.
- Gather your admission, academic, funding, identity, and health documents.
- Confirm where to apply and which visa or entry process to use before traveling.
- Complete your ARC application by the applicable deadline. Check its expiry date, renewal rules, and any separate work-permit requirements.
