Summary
Some people who already hold another type of British nationality can register as British citizens. This is not a visa or an ancestry-based route — it is for people who already have a British nationality status that simply is not full British citizenship.
GOV.UK lists this route for statuses such as British overseas citizen, British protected person, British subject, and British national (overseas). It is not a general immigration path, and it is not the same as having British ancestry.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You already hold a British nationality status that is not British citizenship (for example British overseas citizen, British protected person, British subject, or British national (overseas)).
- You are not already a British citizen.
- You are not already a citizen or national of another country (for the basic route), or you qualify under one of the special routes for British nationals who have lived in the UK for 5 years, worked as Crown servants, have a Gibraltar connection, or have lived in Hong Kong.
- You can document your existing British nationality status and any route-specific connection.
What This Route Allows
If you qualify, you can register as a full British citizen. That converts an existing, more limited British nationality status into British citizenship, with the rights that come with it.
What This Route Is Not
- A visa or a points-based immigration route.
- A route based on British ancestry alone — you must already hold a British nationality status.
- The route for British Overseas Territories Citizens, who generally use separate BOTC-to-British-citizen routes.
- Available if you are already a citizen or national of another country (for the basic route).
Next Steps
- Confirm which British nationality status you currently hold, and that it is not already full British citizenship.
- Check whether the basic route applies, or whether you qualify under the UK-residence, Crown service, Gibraltar, or Hong Kong route instead.
- Gather proof of your British nationality status and identity records.
- Collect any route-specific evidence you need — UK residence records, Crown service evidence, Gibraltar evidence, or Hong Kong residence evidence.
- Review the GOV.UK guidance for your specific status before applying.
