Summary
The UK India Young Professionals Scheme visa lets eligible Indian citizens live and work in the UK for up to 2 years. It is useful because it does not require a UK employer sponsor before arrival, but it is ballot-based: you must be selected in the scheme ballot before you can apply.
This is a temporary route. It cannot be extended, and family members cannot be included on the same application. It can still be valuable as a way to gain UK work experience and later move into a longer-term route, such as Skilled Worker, if a UK employer is willing and able to sponsor.
Irish citizens normally do not need this pathway because of Common Travel Area rights.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are an Indian citizen.
- You are 18 to 30 years old when you plan to travel.
- You have a bachelor's-level qualification or higher, or an equivalent overseas qualification.
- You are selected in the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot.
- You can show the required personal savings.
- You do not have children under 18 who live with you or depend on you financially.
- You have not already been in the UK under this scheme or the Youth Mobility Scheme.
- You can provide the required documents, which may include qualification evidence, savings evidence, a police clearance certificate from India, and TB test results if required.
What This Route Allows
The visa gives up to 24 months of permission to live and work in the UK. You can work in most jobs, study in many situations, travel in and out of the UK, and do limited self-employment if you meet the route's restrictions.
Because the visa does not require sponsorship, it can help young professionals enter the UK job market first and seek sponsored roles later.
What This Route Is Not
- A guaranteed visa: selection in the ballot is required.
- A permanent-residence route by itself.
- A route that can be extended.
- A route for dependants on the same application.
- A route for people who have already used the scheme or the Youth Mobility Scheme.
Next Steps
- Confirm that you are an Indian citizen and will be within the age range when you travel.
- Confirm that your qualification is at bachelor's level or higher.

- If selected, gather savings evidence, qualification evidence, police clearance, and any required TB test result.
- Apply within the deadline given in the ballot invitation.
- If approved, use the 2-year period to build a UK work plan before the visa expires.
