Summary

Uruguay can grant temporary residence to a foreign student enrolled in or formally admitted to a recognized educational institution. The current student category is granted for up to one year at a time and may be renewed in equal periods, subject to the course and temporary-residence limits.

Eligibility

The student needs an official institution certificate confirming enrollment or admission and identifying the course or program. A future intention to apply to a school is not yet the required evidence.

The applicant must also document a means of support for the study period. Depending on the case, that may be personal income or savings, a scholarship, or formal support from another person.

Identity, criminal-record, vaccination, health, and civil-status evidence applies under the current residence checklist. Foreign public documents may require apostille or legalization and Spanish translation. Entry-visa requirements depend on nationality, and minor students need the applicable parental or custody records.

What This Route Allows

Approval permits the student to reside in Uruguay for the authorized temporary period, up to one year for each student grant. Equal-period renewals can be available when enrollment, support, and the other legal conditions continue, subject to the applicable course and category limits.

Any right to work should be confirmed against the current residence and labor rules and the terms of the particular status. Finishing school does not itself convert the permit into permanent residence or citizenship.

What This Route Is Not

It is not granted merely for taking an informal or unrecognized course, and it does not replace admission to the educational institution. It is not an automatic multi-year permit; each student grant is limited to one year.

For an eligible Mercosur national, the student category may be less useful than the nationality-based permanent or temporary route. A student whose studies end must renew on a valid basis or change to another appropriate residence category.
