Summary
Kosovo’s family-reunification routes let eligible relatives join a sponsor, with the applicable category determined by the sponsor’s status and the actual relationship. Marriage, parentage, adoption, guardianship, and recognized cohabitation call for different evidence. A distant relative or informal family connection alone does not establish the accepted basis for residence.
Eligibility
The route covers qualifying spouses, children, and recognized family relationships with a Kosovo citizen or eligible resident sponsor. Cohabiting partners need three years of documented cohabitation or evidence of a child born to the couple.
The sponsor must provide accepted identity or residence records and qualify for family reunification. The household must have sufficient support and suitable housing, with health insurance and the required personal records.
The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Kosovo.
More about this route
For an unmarried couple, the rules use evidence of cohabitation or a child born to the couple rather than simply accepting a declared relationship. That makes the history and documents behind the partnership important before the family begins arranging a shared home in Kosovo.

What This Route Allows
A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Kosovo. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.
What This Route Is Not
The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.
Next Steps
The family should use the evidence appropriate to the relationship: marriage or parentage records, adoption or guardianship records where relevant, or accepted cohabitation evidence. For an unmarried couple, the duration of cohabitation or a shared child matters to the category. The sponsor’s status and the household’s support, housing, and insurance records complete that context.
