Citizenship and Residency Basics

Foundational answers for people who are new to dual citizenship, residence permits, and ancestry-based options.

8 answers

Why would I want to get citizenship in another country?

Another citizenship can create more options for where you can live, work, study, travel, retire, or build a backup plan. For some people it is about ancestry and identity; for others it is about mobility, security, family, or access to another region. As a citizen of another country, you're typically entitled to all the same rights granted to other citizens of that country.

If I get citizenship in another country, do I have any obligations to that country?

For most, no. However, in a few countries, citizenship can come with obligations such as taxes, passport rules, military or civic duties, registration requirements, or rules about entering and leaving on that country's passport. The exact obligations vary by country and personal situation.

What's the difference between citizenship and residency?

Citizenship is a status granting you full membership in a country and usually includes a passport and a strong right to live, work, and participate in all aspects of civic life there permanently. Residency lets you live in a country under specific conditions, often for work, study, family, investment, retirement, or remote work. Residency can be granted for longer periods — even permanently — but it's often granted for a limited duration.

Can I have citizenship in one country and residency in another?

Yes. For example, you might be a U.S. citizen and hold a residence permit in Portugal, Mexico, Canada, or another country. Citizenship and residency are separate statuses.

I have an ancestor from a particular country. Does that mean I can get citizenship there?

Maybe, but we need more information to know for certain. Citizenship by descent depends on the country's law, the ancestor, whether citizenship passed through each generation, key dates, older gender or marriage rules, and whether you can document the family line. The easiest way to check is via the Citizeo discovery process.

I have DNA results that show I have ancestry from a particular country. Does that mean I can get citizenship there?

Unfortunately, this isn't enough. DNA results can be personally meaningful, but citizenship by descent normally requires civil records such as birth, marriage, adoption, naturalization, and other documents. Governments generally need legal proof of a qualifying family relationship. If you're curious whether your personal situation potentially makes you eligible for a second citizenship, the easiest way to check is via the Citizeo discovery process.

Citizeo Basics

How Citizeo works, what your results mean, and how to use discovery when you are just getting started.

15 answers

What is Citizeo?

Citizeo is a free discovery tool for citizenship and residency options. It helps you explore pathways that may fit your background, goals, ancestry, family situation, work profile, income, and lifestyle.

Who is Citizeo for?

Citizeo is for people who want to understand their options for citizenship, residency, long-term visas, or a future move abroad. Many users are new to dual citizenship, citizenship by descent, digital nomad visas, retirement visas, work visas, or family-based routes.

Do I need an account to use Citizeo?

No. You can start discovery without creating an account. An account helps you save progress, return to your results later, and start a pathway request when you are ready.

How does Citizeo work?

Citizeo asks questions about your goals, citizenships, family background, ancestry, work, education, income, savings, and other facts that can matter for citizenship and residency rules. It compares your answers with structured data and shows pathways that match. If you find a matching pathway you'd like to pursue, Citizeo makes it easy to work with an expert to formally file paperwork for an additional citizenship or residency visa.

How accurate is Citizeo?

Citizeo is designed to be a careful, accurate discovery tool, not a legal opinion. It uses researched pathway data and source links, but real eligibility can depend on exact dates, document wording, prior citizenship status, family records, immigration history, criminal history, and government discretion.

What kind of information do I need to provide for the discovery process?

You may be asked about your current citizenships, country of birth, parents and grandparents, goals, work history, education, income, savings, family relationships, languages, and countries of interest. You do not need every answer to get started.

What kind of results will I get from the discovery process?

You may see likely matches, conditional matches, possible matches that need more information, and pathways that do not appear to fit based on what you entered. Each pathway includes detailed information on eligibility and next steps.

How long does the discovery process take?

The discovery process is tailored to each user's situation, but most people can answer the core questions in just a few minutes. More complex family, ancestry, or work situations may take longer.

How can I focus the discovery process on a particular country or region?

If you already have a country in mind, simply let Citizeo know during the discovery process.

What if I don't know the answer to a particular question?

That's normal. Choose not sure when available, or continue with the information you have. Some pathways may show as possible matches or may ask for more information before Citizeo can evaluate them more clearly.

I was a likely match for a particular pathway. What does that mean?

A likely match means your answers appear to satisfy the main screening rules Citizeo has modeled for that pathway. It does not guarantee approval. The next step is to review the pathway details and confirm the facts with documents.

I was a possible match for a particular pathway. What does that mean?

A possible match means Citizeo sees a pathway that may fit, but it needs more information or stronger confirmation before treating it as likely. This often happens when dates, documents, income, job details, or family records are incomplete.

I was a conditional match for a particular pathway. What does that mean?

A conditional match means the pathway may fit if a specific condition is true or can be satisfied. For example, you may need a job offer, a minimum income level, a document, a qualifying family relationship, or proof that an ancestor had a certain citizenship status.

Does Citizeo keep track of my progress?

If you create or use an account, Citizeo can save your progress and results so you can return later. If you use Citizeo without an account, your ability to recover progress may be limited.

How does Citizeo stay up-to-date with changes in citizenship and residency laws?

Citizeo constantly researches pathway rules against government sources, statutes, agency guidance, and other reliable materials. We update pathway data as rules change, but immigration law changes often. We directly link to official sources in pathway details to make it easy for your to review.
