Summary
The UAE does not have a normal residence-based naturalization system. Living in the UAE for many years on a work visa, Green Visa, or Golden Visa does not by itself let you apply for citizenship.
The route that does exist is citizenship by nomination. That means a UAE authority must nominate you first. You do not file a standard public application on your own.
Eligibility
You may qualify only if all of these are true:
Formal nomination
- You have a real nomination from the Federal Cabinet, a Ruler's Court, or an Emirate's Executive Council.
- Informal interest, general networking, or simply being accomplished is not enough on its own.
Recognised category
- Your case fits one of the categories the UAE has publicly named for nomination, such as investor, doctor, specialist, scientist, inventor, intellectual, or other recognised talent.
- The exact proof depends on the category.
Final approval steps
- You can complete the oath and any final citizenship formalities the UAE authority asks for.
- You understand that the grant is discretionary and can be withdrawn if the legal conditions are breached.
What this pathway is not
- It is not a normal "citizenship after X years" route.
- It is not something most long-term residents can count on.
- It is different from any family-based citizenship route through an Emirati parent or spouse.
What This Route Allows
If approved, this route can lead to citizenship in the United Arab Emirates. Citizenship is the national status itself, not a residence permit: you can document the citizenship, apply for citizen identity or passport documents, and live in the United Arab Emirates without a separate immigration permit.
What This Route Is Not
This is not automatic citizenship. Naturalization, registration, and restoration routes usually require an application, supporting documents, and a decision by the relevant authority.
Next Steps
- Confirm whether your case is actually in a formal nomination channel.
- Work through the UAE authority or institution supporting your nomination, not through a standard visa application flow.
- Gather category-specific evidence early, such as approvals, recommendation letters, awards, patents, contracts, or investment records.
- Check the dual-citizenship position for your specific case before making plans around a second passport.
- If you do not already have a formal nomination, treat this as an exceptional possibility rather than an active option.
