Summary
Antigua and Barbuda's 2023 immigration amendment expressly allows a lawful visitor intending to reside as a retiree to apply for a change of status. After approval and payment of the prescribed fee, the person becomes lawfully ordinarily resident.
Eligibility
You must be applying on the retirement basis and be able to document financial stability and an address in Antigua and Barbuda. This route does not establish permission to continue employment or run a business.
Schedule 7 excludes people who have remained illegally and prohibited immigrants. Someone planning from abroad first needs lawful entry as a visitor; this is a local change-of-status procedure.
Required material includes identity and arrival-stamp records, a recent photograph, sponsor or next-of-kin details, applicable civil-status records, a letter of intent, and a medical certificate. The law requires an appointment and interview, where additional evidence may be requested. It does not specify one retirement age or income minimum applicable to every applicant.
What This Route Allows
The approved change establishes ordinary resident status on the retirement basis. Confirm the endorsement, permitted stay, and continuing requirements directly with Immigration. Keep evidence of the approval date: ordinary residence matters for later applications.
If the basis ends, the Chief Immigration Officer may treat the change of status as void. Family members should confirm their own application basis and documentation.
What This Route Is Not
This is not the separate residence permit after four qualifying years, permanent residence, or citizenship. Visitor time before the change does not automatically become ordinary residence.
Owning a home alone does not issue this status, and a pending application should not be treated as permission to overstay.
Next Steps
- Confirm the retirement category, current procedure, fee, and permitted stay with Immigration before making relocation commitments.
- Enter lawfully if applying from abroad, and maintain lawful status.
- Gather the Schedule 7 records, make the appointment, and attend the interview.
- Obtain the approved endorsement and retain proof of payment and ordinary resident status.
