Type
Trans-Tasman mobility right
Who it covers
New Zealand citizens entering Australia on a New Zealand passport
Core documents
New Zealand passport and Australian entry checks
Why it helps
It allows Australian residence and work without a standard visa application

Summary

New Zealand citizens with a valid New Zealand passport generally do not need to apply for a visa before coming to Australia. When they enter Australia, they can apply for and usually be granted a Special Category visa (subclass 444), often called the SCV.

The important point: this is a Trans-Tasman mobility pathway, not a normal Australian work visa. If you are a New Zealand citizen, it can give you the ability to live, work, and study in Australia without first winning a points test, employer sponsorship, or a separate residence visa.

Eligibility

You may be a fit if:

The SCV is for New Zealand citizens. Family members who are not New Zealand citizens usually need their own Australian visa route.

What This Route Allows

The SCV generally lets a New Zealand citizen live, work, and study in Australia while the visa remains in effect. It is normally granted when the person enters Australia on a New Zealand passport and meets the visa criteria.

Since 1 July 2023, SCV holders can generally apply directly for Australian citizenship by conferral if they meet the separate citizenship requirements. They do not need to first become Australian permanent residents solely for that citizenship application route.

What This Route Is Not

Next Steps

  1. Confirm you hold New Zealand citizenship, not only New Zealand residence.
  2. Make sure your New Zealand passport is current before travel.
  3. If you have criminal, exclusion, health, or security complications, check Australian admissibility before relying on the SCV.
  4. If family members are not New Zealand citizens, check their Australian visa options separately.
  5. If your long-term goal is Australian citizenship, review the citizenship-by-conferral residence and eligibility rules before planning around the SCV.
