Summary
Barbados has a distinct permanent resident status, but it is not a general route for anyone who has lived or worked in the country for several years. Section 5 of the current Immigration Act identifies limited categories.
The main time-based category is for someone who was first granted Barbados immigrant status and then resided in Barbados for at least five years. The Act also contains narrow family and historical parentage categories.
Eligibility
The current Act and Form A1 identify these principal situations:
- A permitted entrant who was granted immigrant status under section 6 and, after receiving that status, resided in Barbados for at least five years.
- A permitted entrant who is the husband of a Barbados citizen by birth or descent. This is the gender-specific wording in the current consolidated Act; it should not be generalized to every spouse without confirmation from Immigration.
- A person born outside Barbados to a mother who was a citizen by birth where the Constitution's automatic-citizenship provisions did not apply. This is a narrow historical provision, not a general parentage route.
Section 5 also refers to exceptional historical constitutional classes. Those cases often overlap with a right to register as a citizen and require individual review rather than a general permanent-residence assumption.
Applicants must provide the identity, civil-status, residence, medical, police, employment, education, and other records applicable to their category. Section 5A permits refusal on specified safety, law, public-order, or good-government grounds.
Permanent-resident categories could be substantially recast
Permanent-resident categories could be substantially recast
The Immigration Bill would replace the current immigrant-status-plus-five-years model with several direct family, retirement, former-citizen, descent and points-based categories. Existing immigrants and unfinished immigrant or permanent-resident applications would receive transitional treatment.
Timing: Both bills were introduced on 21 April 2026 and referred to a joint select committee on 29 April 2026. Parliament still lists them at the House stage. If passed, each bill says it would commence on a date set by proclamation; no commencement date has been announced.
Current pathway rules still apply.
What This Route Allows
Permanent resident status permits the holder to enter and reside in Barbados while the status remains valid. Under the current Act, permanent residents are generally exempt from the ordinary work-permit requirement.
What This Route Is Not
It is not citizenship and does not follow automatically from a temporary permit, employment, property ownership, or five years spent in Barbados without first holding immigrant status.
The 2026 Immigration Bill proposes different and broader permanent-residence categories, but Barbados Parliament currently lists that measure at the House of Assembly stage. Proposed provisions should not be treated as current law unless the bill passes and commences.
Next Steps
- Identify the exact section 5 category that describes you.
- For the five-year route, locate the grant of immigrant status and calculate residence from that date rather than from first arrival.
- Download Form A1 and the medical form from Barbados Immigration.
- Collect original civil-status, residence, police, medical, employment, education, and translated records required for your category.
- Confirm with Immigration that the current Act still governs your filing, particularly while the 2026 bill remains before Parliament.
- Submit the application and retain the registration certificate after approval.
