Summary
Belgium has a trainee authorization for third-country nationals who hold a higher-education degree, or are pursuing one, and will complete a professional traineeship with a Belgian employer or host entity.
The Belgian host drives the process. The trainee needs a real training agreement, and the application is handled through the regional work-authorization system with residence documents included.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are not Belgian or using EU/EEA/Swiss free-movement rights.
- You have completed higher education or are pursuing it.
- A Belgian employer or host entity is willing to support the traineeship.
- The traineeship is documented in a training agreement.
- You can show resources, housing, insurance, medical, and criminal-record documents.
What This Route Allows
If approved, the trainee authorization lets you live in Belgium for the covered traineeship.
What This Route Is Not
This is not ordinary employment. If the Belgian role is a normal job, the Single Permit or EU Blue Card may be more appropriate.
Next Steps
- Confirm the traineeship structure and training agreement with the Belgian host.
- Check which Belgian region handles the work-authorization component.
- Gather degree or enrollment evidence.
- Prepare resources, housing, insurance, medical, and criminal-record documents.
- Have the Belgian host submit the application through the regional process.
