Summary
Bulgaria’s family-reunification route allows a qualifying foreign resident to bring an eligible spouse or child when the resident’s permit supports it. Check its category and remaining validity alongside the household's support and any custody records.
This application is for joining a foreign resident. Family of Bulgarian citizens or other EU citizens may follow different rules, so establish the sponsor's nationality and status before choosing the process.
Eligibility
The ordinary resident-family route covers the spouse and minor children of a qualifying foreign resident, including the spouse’s children where the required custody and consent are established.
The sponsor must hold a Bulgarian residence permit valid for at least one year and qualify to bring family under that category. Family members complete their own visa and residence applications.
The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Bulgaria.
-
Sponsor's permit Confirm the category supports family and the permit is valid for at least one year.
-
Qualifying relative Document marriage or the eligible minor-child relationship, including custody where needed.
-
Separate applications Prepare visa and residence files with support, housing, and health coverage.
The sponsor's permit does not automatically give family members residence.
What This Route Allows
A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Bulgaria. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.
What This Route Is Not
The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.
Next Steps
The sponsor’s permit category and validity need to be checked before arranging the family’s visa and residence applications. Marriage, birth, and any custody or consent records establish which relatives can join. The application also needs to show the household’s support, housing, and health coverage for the move.
