- A pension and enough money to cover your stay
- Banking
- Bulgarian account for pension transfers
Summary
Bulgaria’s pensioner residence route is for people with a documented pension entitlement and the means to support themselves there. Show the pension itself, enough resources for living costs, and arrangements for the payments to reach a Bulgarian bank account. Savings or investment income alone do not replace the pension requirement.
-
Confirm entitlement Obtain the pension authority's certificate.
-
Arrange the stay Document support, a Bulgarian bank account, housing, and health coverage.
-
Visa then residence Follow the consular entry stage and Bulgarian residence procedure.
The pension entitlement and payment arrangements require different evidence.
Eligibility
Pension status must be supported by the issuing authority. Financial evidence must meet the current support requirement, and a Bulgarian bank account must be available for pension transfers. Housing, health insurance, and the general immigration checks also apply.
What This Route Allows
An approved applicant can live in Bulgaria on the pensioner basis, following the required long-stay visa and residence procedures. Continued residence depends on maintaining the relevant conditions and completing renewals when required.
The route provides a way to make retirement the reason for the stay without needing a local employer. Any plan to take a job needs a separate review of work permission; the pension-based residence application does not settle that question.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a general remote-work visa. A savings balance alone does not replace pension evidence, and permission to take employment must be considered separately.
Next Steps
The Bulgarian consulate can identify the pension certificate, financial records, bank arrangements, and other documents required for the long-stay visa. The pension authority and bank provide different parts of that evidence: one establishes the entitlement, while the other supports the payment arrangements.
After the entry stage, the residence application follows the Bulgarian procedure. The current support requirement and renewal documents should be confirmed for that application rather than assumed from another retiree’s experience.
