Bolivia Permanent Residence

Bolivia Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

Bolivia’s permanent residence route is for people with three years of qualifying residence. Time in the study and medical categories does not count.

Time living there
Three years under residence permissions that count toward permanent residence
Excluded time
Study and medical residence do not count; tourist stays and exceptional permissions do not automatically count
Time abroad
Temporary residents generally cannot spend more than 90 days abroad per year without migration-authority authorization

Summary

People who have built a qualifying residence history in Bolivia can apply for permanent residence, allowing them to stay indefinitely if approved. The authorities check previous permits and entry and exit records to establish three qualifying years; study and medical residence do not count toward this conversion. Visits and exceptional permissions cannot simply be added to the total.

Absence rules matter both before and after approval. Temporary residents generally need authorization for more than ninety days abroad in a year, and permanent residence can be canceled after more than two continuous years abroad without the required approval. Permanent residence remains separate from citizenship.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

You need three years of residence that counts toward this application. Time in the study or medical categories does not count. Tourist stays and exceptional permissions do not automatically count either.

Temporary residents generally cannot spend more than 90 days outside Bolivia per year unless the migration authority authorizes it. Your previous permits and entry and exit records must show that you meet the requirements.

You will also need identity and immigration records, proof of how you will support yourself, and the required criminal-record and health documents. Documents from abroad may need official authentication and translation. Bolivia’s migration authority, DIGEMIG, can confirm the checklist for your situation.

What This Route Allows

Permanent residence lets you live in Bolivia indefinitely, subject to the rules for keeping that status. You still need to renew your foreign-resident identity card every five years.

What This Route Is Not

Permanent residence does not give you Bolivian citizenship. Spending more than two continuous years abroad without the required authorization can lead to cancellation of your residence.

Next Steps

  1. Gather your previous residence permits and entry and exit records.
  2. Ask DIGEMIG to confirm which periods of residence count and whether your absences meet the rules.
  3. Prepare the required personal and financial documents and apply for permanent residence.
  4. After approval, keep track of identity-card renewals and the rules for time spent abroad.
