Summary
The Cook Islands International Worker permit allows an approved foreign employee to live and work in a supported local job, normally after the employer has tried to recruit a suitable Cook Islander or permanent resident. A registered employer supplies the compliant contract and recruitment evidence, while the worker documents English ability, support, health, character and departure arrangements.
Previous permits can affect a new application, including any required period outside the islands. Changing employer also requires the appropriate application. The temporary concessions published in 2024 ended on January 25, 2025 and should not be used to plan current renewals.
Eligibility
The employer must provide a contract that meets local requirements and the required recruitment evidence. You need sufficient English, accepted support arrangements, health and character records, and a plan for leaving when required.
Ask about the orientation course and any rules linked to earlier Cook Islands permits. Your previous stays can affect the current application.
-
Confirm the offer and local recruitment checks The employer prepares a suitable contract and hiring evidence.
-
Prepare the worker application Check English, support, personal records, orientation, and prior-permit rules.
-
Follow the approved job and stay conditions Confirm renewal rules and any required time outside the Cook Islands.
Expired temporary concessions do not establish a right to unlimited renewals.
What This Route Allows
The approved visa and permit let you stay and do the stated job for the period granted. Check the permit limits and whether you must spend time outside the Cook Islands between permits.
What This Route Is Not
The permit does not give automatic permanent residence or let you freely switch employers. A new employer needs the appropriate application.
Temporary policy concessions published in 2024 ended on January 25, 2025. Do not rely on those concessions when planning renewals.
Next Steps
- Confirm the offer and the employer’s evidence of local recruitment.
- Prepare the contract, English and support evidence, personal records, and any orientation requirements.
- Obtain the visa and permit and check the rules for renewal, changing jobs, and required time outside the country.
