Summary

If you have a job offer in mainland China, your employer can help arrange the approvals you need to live and work there. The usual process involves work approval, a Z entry visa, and a work-related residence permit after arrival.

The visa alone is not permission to start work. Your employer must confirm when the required work and residence steps are complete.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Your job and employer

Your employer must obtain permission to hire you for the actual job. Your qualifications, experience, age, and any professional license must meet the rules for that type of work. There is no single degree-and-experience requirement for every foreign worker.

The Z-visa application normally uses a document called the Notice for the Work Permit for Foreigners. Ask the employer which work category applies, who handles each application, and which documents you must provide.

Before and after arrival

Use the employer's approval documents to apply for the correct entry visa. Prepare your passport, employment records, qualifications, and any required medical or background records. Check which documents need official certification.

After arrival, complete the foreigner work permit and work-related residence process with the local authorities, normally within 30 days. Confirm the date you may legally start work.

From a job offer to working in China
  1. Get employer support The employer confirms your work category and obtains the required hiring approval.
  2. Apply for the entry visa Use the employer's documents for the Z-visa application.
  3. Complete the local permits After arrival Finish the work and residence steps and confirm when you may start.

An entry visa alone does not authorize work. The permits cover the approved employment conditions.

What This Route Allows

With the required permits, you can live in China and work in the approved job. Each permit states its own validity period and conditions; do not assume you will receive the longest possible stay.

Changing employers or duties can require new approval. A spouse or child needs a separate family application and must check their own work rights.

What This Route Is Not

This permission does not cover work in Hong Kong or Macao. A business visit, visa-free tourist stay, or family residence permit does not replace approval to work in mainland China.

Work residence is not citizenship or an automatic path to permanent residence.

Next Steps

  1. Ask the employer to confirm the work category and arrange the required hiring approval.
  2. Collect your contract, qualifications, passport, and any required health or background records.
  3. Apply for the entry visa using the employer's supporting documents.
  4. Complete the work-permit, registration, and residence steps after arrival, normally within 30 days.
  5. Check your start date, expiry dates, employer restrictions, and renewal process before working.
