Cyprus Residence for European Family
At a glance
Close family of an eligible EU or EEA citizen may join them in Cyprus under European family-residence rules. Both the relationship and the citizen's qualifying residence must be documented.
- Sponsor
- An EU or EEA citizen qualifying to live in Cyprus; returning Cypriots need a qualifying stay abroad
- Family relationship
- Spouse, recognized partner, child under 21 or dependent child, or dependent parent; student sponsors have narrower family rules
- Household support
- A sponsor who is not working needs sufficient resources and comprehensive health coverage
Summary
If you are joining a qualifying EU or EEA citizen in Cyprus, you may qualify for residence through your family relationship. You need to prove that relationship and that the citizen meets the rules for living there. You may not need a separate work- or study-based permit.
Cyprus uses the MEU2 application for a non-European family member. The permission concerns the Republic of Cyprus; it does not settle immigration status in the northern part of the island.
-
Check their reason for living in Cyprus Your EU or EEA family member must meet the residence conditions.
-
Prove the family relationship Include evidence of financial dependence and health coverage where required.
-
Apply for the residence card Check the entry documents and the deadline for the MEU2 application.
This process applies in the Republic of Cyprus. A card from another country does not by itself give you local residence rights.
Eligibility
EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
The sponsor must be an EU or EEA citizen living in Cyprus under free-movement rules. A citizen of Cyprus needs a qualifying return after genuinely exercising those rights abroad; citizenship alone is not enough for this particular route. This check focuses on EU and EEA sponsors.
This covers a spouse or recognized registered partner, a direct descendant under 21 or dependent on the sponsor, or a dependent direct ancestor. The child or parent may be related to the sponsor’s spouse. An unmarried relationship or a more distant relative needs a separate assessment.
The citizen must be working or self-employed, or have sufficient resources and comprehensive health coverage. For a student sponsor, the automatic family right is narrower: spouse or recognized partner and dependent children. A dependent parent cannot rely on the student basis alone.
What This Route Allows
A qualifying family member may reside with the citizen and take employment or self-employment. The residence card normally lasts five years, or for the citizen’s intended stay if shorter. Later permanent residence depends on the relevant continuous legal residence history; it is not granted with the first card.
What This Route Is Not
A passport from an EU country does not sponsor every relative automatically. Nor does a residence card issued by another European country establish the same right in Cyprus. Unmarried partners, wider relatives, and citizens returning to their own country require attention to the separate rules that apply to them.
Next Steps
- Check your family member's status’s citizenship and the residence activity the household will rely on.
- Gather relationship records and, where necessary, evidence of financial dependency and health coverage.
- Check entry-document requirements and submit the local residence-card application within the applicable deadline.
