Summary

Germany's Researcher Visa is for researchers with a hosting agreement or work contract with a German research institution. It is issued under Section 18d of the Residence Act.

The official route generally requires:

Eligibility

What This Pathway Allows

If approved, the research residence permit is issued for at least one year. It allows work at the research institute listed in the contract and can also allow teaching.

Germany's official guidance says researchers can receive a settlement permit after four years if the settlement requirements are met. After the research position ends, they may receive up to 18 months to find another position aligned with their qualifications.

What This Pathway Is Not

This is not the student route for a full-time PhD program that is not tied to a research employment contract. Germany's official guidance says full-time doctoral study as part of a program generally uses the study route instead.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm the German host institute and whether the arrangement is a hosting agreement or work contract.
  2. Confirm the cost-coverage commitment or public-funding exception.
  3. Gather PhD, degree, CV, research-project, passport, and insurance documents.
  4. Apply through the German mission or Consular Services Portal if eligible.
  5. Plan settlement and post-research job-search options early.
