Summary

Germany's Work Visa for Qualified Professionals is for people with academic or vocational qualifications and a specific qualified job offer in Germany. It is the broad skilled-worker route under Sections 18a and 18b of the Residence Act, separate from the EU Blue Card.

The core fit is simple:

Germany says the job does not always have to match the field of your qualification, although regulated professions still require the right professional authorization.

Eligibility

What This Pathway Allows

If approved, this pathway allows you to live in Germany and work in the qualifying job. Germany's official guidance says the permit can be issued for up to four years, or for the employment-contract term plus three months if shorter.

Qualified professionals can usually move toward settlement after at least three years of qualifying employment, if the settlement requirements are met.

What This Pathway Is Not

This is not the EU Blue Card. The Blue Card can be faster for highly qualified workers who meet its qualification and salary rules, but this skilled-worker route is broader.

It is also not a job-search route. If you do not yet have a German offer, compare the Germany Opportunity Card.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm whether your qualification is recognized or comparable in Germany.
  2. Confirm that the German job is qualified employment.
  3. Check whether the work is regulated and needs professional licensing.
  4. If you are over 45, verify the salary or pension provision rule.
  5. Prepare your employment contract, qualification evidence, passport, health insurance, and civil documents.
  6. Apply through the German mission or the Federal Foreign Office Consular Services Portal when eligible.
