Dominican Republic Permanent Residence

Pathway overview

At a glance

If you hold ordinary temporary residence in the Dominican Republic, you can apply to change to RP-1 permanent residence after completing the required renewals. DGM's detailed checklist asks for your first temporary card plus four renewals, financial evidence, and current personal records. Ask DGM to confirm that your residence history is complete.

Residence history
Ordinary temporary residents with the first card and four annual renewals; confirm any exception with immigration
Documents
Residence or relationship records for the category
Funds required
Accepted Dominican bank, property, investment, savings, or guarantee-policy records

Summary

Ordinary temporary residents in the Dominican Republic can seek permanent residence through RP-1 by documenting their full history, including the first card and four renewals requested in immigration’s detailed checklist. Current personal and financial records must also support the change of status.

The service page's introductory reference to one year conflicts with that detailed requirement. Ask DGM to resolve any exceptional case before relying on a shorter period; the general introduction is not confirmation that one year will qualify.

Eligibility

First temporary card and four annual renewals

DGM's detailed RP-1 checklist and five-year explanation set out the required residence history. E-1 student permission and tourist stays are not ordinary temporary-residence cards. Ask DGM to confirm that your renewal history is complete.

Financial evidence or a guarantee accepted for RP-1

DGM lists a DOP 150,000 bank letter with recent transactions, property documentation, investment or savings certificates, and an approved guarantee-policy arrangement where financial support is insufficient.

Documents for your application

Provide your temporary card, Dominican identity card, passport, current Dominican police certificate, photographs, application letter, and any medical examination required by DGM.

Check the complete card and renewal history before changing category
  1. Collect the ordinary temporary records Document the first card and the four annual renewals required by the detailed RP-1 checklist.
  2. Confirm gaps and financial evidence Ask DGM to verify the history and prepare accepted support or guarantee records.
  3. Apply for the category change Keep personal documents and lawful status current while the new application is decided.

Tourist stays and E-1 student permission do not substitute for ordinary temporary-residence cards.

What This Route Allows

Approval changes the immigration category to permanent residence. The first RP-1 card lasts one year; later cards are renewable for four-year periods.

What This Route Is Not

The introductory description on DGM’s service page says one year, but its audience and requirements sections expressly ask for the first card plus four renewals. Do not use that introduction as a promise that one year of ordinary residence is enough. Confirm any exceptional or different route directly with DGM.

Next Steps

Collect the complete card and renewal history before requesting the category change. Review any gaps or expired status with DGM, and maintain lawful status while the new application is decided.
