Ecuador Independent-Work Residence
At a glance
Ecuador’s self-employed residence route is for documented independent work, professional services, or consulting. You need the work-specific contract, registration, or permit records; a business idea or tax number alone is not enough.
- Activity
- Independent work, services, or consulting
- Evidence
- Contracts, registration, or operating permission
- Support
- Proof of lawful financial support
Summary
If you work independently, provide professional services, or consult in Ecuador, you may qualify for temporary residence through that activity. You need documents showing the actual work, such as an accepted services contract, tax registration, or local operating permit.
This differs from residence through a recognized qualification or remote work for people abroad. A business idea, property purchase, or tax number alone is not enough.
Eligibility
Depending on the activity, evidence includes a service contract with notarized signatures, a qualifying tax registration for an existing resident changing category, or a local operating permit. A general business idea is not enough.
Independent workers also need the specified sworn declaration and photographic evidence or relevant property or registered-lease records. The financial evidence must meet the current means-of-support rules. Professional licensing remains separate where required.
The application needs a valid passport, applicable background records, and evidence of lawful status if applying in Ecuador. Foreign records must meet the authentication and translation rules. The electronic application and payment must be completed as instructed by the Foreign Ministry.
-
Explain your work in Ecuador Identify the professional service, independent work, or consulting to be performed.
-
Gather the required work documents Use the qualifying contract, tax registration, or local permit for the particular case.
-
Prepare financial and personal records Prepare the required declaration and supporting records and confirm that your immigration status allows you to apply.
The activity-document options depend on the case. A business idea or tax number alone does not complete the residence basis.
What This Route Allows
If approved, you can live in Ecuador and carry out the accepted independent work. The permission lasts two years and allows multiple entries. Any professional license needed for the work remains a separate requirement.
What This Route Is Not
This is not permission to work while still a tourist. A property purchase or a tax number by itself does not establish every part of the residence application.
Next Steps
- Confirm which contract, registration, operating permit, and support records apply to your work.
- Prepare the sworn declaration and photographic, property, or registered-lease evidence required for the activity.
- Check any professional licensing requirements.
- Prepare personal documents, authentication, and translations, then apply through the Foreign Ministry’s electronic process.
- If applying inside Ecuador, confirm that your current status permits it. Applicants abroad do not need a previous Ecuadorian visa just to request this category.
