Egypt Student Residence
At a glance
If you have a place at an Egyptian institution that supports student residence applications, you may be able to live in Egypt while studying. Before making travel plans, ask the school which entry and residence steps apply to your course and nationality. Admission alone is not permission to move to Egypt.

- Personal records
- Identity and security-check documents, with any required translations or official certification
Summary
Students accepted by a qualifying Egyptian institution can seek permission to live in Egypt for their studies, through a process that depends on the course, nationality, and place of application. A school must be able to support the residence process, and enrollment is separate from government entry and security approval. Ask the international-student office for the full sequence before booking travel.
Applicants need financial support and the personal records required for their case, including any translations or certification. Published fees and renewal arrangements from one university are not universal rules for every student. Employment or a stay after graduation requires a separate permission check.
Eligibility
You need admission to an institution that can support the residence application, evidence that you can pay your study and living costs, and the requested identity and security-check documents.
Ask the international-student office for a checklist covering your nationality, course, and whether you will apply from inside or outside Egypt. Check which records need translation or official certification to be accepted, and whether any approval is needed before you travel.
The American University in Cairo (AUC), for example, tells international students to state study as their travel purpose and complete student residence after arrival with the university’s help. Enrollment and government security approval are separate steps. Other institutions must confirm their own application process and permit length.
AUC’s guidance describes annual residence-card renewal and an EGP 7,100 residence-visa charge. This is an example from one institution, not a fee guaranteed for every student application in Egypt. Ask your school for the current cost and any extra charges.
If you already hold another type of Egyptian residence permission, ask whether you need to change to a student permit.
-
Confirm admission and the school’s requirements Ask which entry and residence steps apply to your course and nationality.
-
Prepare the documents and entry permission Check financial support, identity records, and any required advance approval.
-
Complete student residence with the school’s help Track the expiry date and prepare renewal or a later change of status.
Your school must confirm the process for you; admission alone does not grant entry or residence.
What This Route Allows
With the required permission, you can stay in Egypt for the approved studies and period. You must continue to meet the enrollment and immigration requirements. Ask when the school can provide renewal documents, and start renewal before the permission expires.
What This Route Is Not
An admission letter does not itself authorize entry or residence. Do not assume tourist entry or a visa on arrival covers your study plans. Confirm the visa requirements before paying for a course.
Student residence does not promise general permission to work, time to look for a job after graduation, or permanent residence. Check work plans separately and arrange any different permission needed to remain after your studies.
Next Steps
- Obtain admission and ask the school to confirm your entry and residence steps.
- Gather the requested passport, financial-support, academic, medical, and background records.
- Arrange the required entry approval and complete the residence application with the school’s help.
- Check the permit’s expiry date and work restrictions. Plan renewal or another residence option before your approved stay ends.
