North Africa Residence and Investment Options Compared

A move to North Africa can start with a supported job, study, a spouse, independent income, or a qualifying investment. The right starting point depends on what you will do there. A European, Canadian, or U.S. passport does not by itself provide a right to settle or work.

The North Africa guide compares options in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt. These are application routes, with evidence and approval requirements. A short entry visa or visa-free visit serves a different purpose.

Work and study

Destination Work route Study route Main distinction
Morocco Employer-supported residence Student registration card Employees need an approved contract. Students need enrollment and sufficient resources. Both must complete the appropriate local residence process.
Tunisia Employment residence Student residence Employees need an approved contract or an official exemption certificate. Students need current-year enrollment, support, and accommodation evidence.
Algeria Work visa and residence Study visa and residence Work entry needs labor authorization and employer documents. Study needs a state-approved institution and funding. Apply for the resident card before the entry visa expires.
Egypt Employment residence University residence Work needs the labor and immigration approvals required for the job. Universities support their students’ residence process, but admission alone is insufficient.

Check work rights separately from residence duration. A student permit does not promise unrestricted employment or a route to stay after graduation. Egypt’s American University in Cairo currently lists an EGP 7,100 residence-visa charge and annual card renewal; other institutions must confirm their own process and current costs. See AUC’s official instructions.

Retirement and independent means

Morocco’s visitor residence card can suit someone supported by a pension or other independent resources. It requires an undertaking concerning professional activity that needs authorization. It should not be treated as a remote-work visa.

Tunisia’s retirement category asks for evidence of regular pension or other income transfers and excludes salaried professional activity. Algeria’s nonworking residence basis requires accepted evidence of support for a stay without an intended activity.

The reviewed official provisions do not publish one universal monthly income minimum for these routes. Confirm the evidence and level of support required for your household before making financial commitments. Housing, healthcare, taxes, banking access, and the residence application all need their own planning; a low living-cost estimate is not an eligibility rule.

Investment residence and citizenship

Route Published financial or business basis Result to apply for
Egypt property-owner residence USD $50,000 property value for one year; USD $100,000 for three years; USD $200,000 for five years Temporary non-tourist residence; the property periods are renewable under the published decision
Egypt bank-deposit residence USD $50,000 for one year or USD $100,000 for three years, or an accepted foreign-currency equivalent Temporary non-tourist residence; confirm the bank, holding, repayment, and renewal terms
Egypt business-investor residence Qualifying company ownership and project meeting GAFI and Interior Ministry controls Investor residence linked to the project; the regulations describe one year at incorporation and later reviewed renewals
Morocco authorized-business residence Genuine local activity with the required business and professional permissions Registration card covering the approved activity
Tunisia business-investor residence Eligible investor or management role, official employment-ministry certificate, and company records Investor residence following a separate application
Algeria authorized-business residence Documented lawful activity, with the required registrations and professional card Foreign-resident card alongside the necessary business permissions
Egypt citizenship through investment Government contribution from USD $250,000, qualifying property from USD $300,000, a business investment plus contribution, or a USD $500,000 deposit; separate USD $10,000 application fee Citizenship only after final government approval

Egypt’s property and bank-deposit residence bands come from Interior Ministry Decision 977 of 2023. The decision leaves detailed controls to Immigration. Confirm the proposed property or bank product and the accepted evidence before paying. The amounts are qualifying values, not complete application or relocation budgets.

The citizenship program’s deposit has its own repayment rule: Egyptian pounds after three years, without interest, using the specified exchange-rate calculation. Do not assume that rule also applies to the smaller residence deposits. Likewise, company ownership in any of these destinations does not automatically grant residence or permission to work in an unrelated job.

Joining a spouse

Family options include residence with a Moroccan citizen spouse and residence with a Tunisian citizen spouse. Both require recognized marriage records and the applicable entry and residence process. Neither is a citizenship grant. An engagement or an unmarried partnership should not be assumed to meet the requirements for these routes.
