Ethiopia Student Residence
At a glance
If an accredited Ethiopian institution accepts you for higher education, you can apply for a student visa. To continue living in Ethiopia for your studies, you also need to complete the temporary residence-ID process.
- Who can apply
- Students accepted by an accredited Ethiopian institution
- Money to show
- Tuition payment or scholarship details, plus enough money for living costs
- Ministry letter
- The residence-ID application asks for Education Ministry support
Summary
International students can seek permission to live in Ethiopia for an approved course, with student entry permission and the temporary residence ID handled as separate steps. The institution should help confirm the sequence, including Education Ministry support for the residence application and the documents showing admission and course funding.
The file needs tuition or scholarship records, living support and a passport with at least six months of validity, alongside the relevant entry records. A course offer does not itself authorize residence, and student status should not be treated as unrestricted work permission.
Eligibility
Show your acceptance, tuition payment or scholarship details, and enough money to support your stay. The temporary residence-ID application also asks for a letter from the Education Ministry.
Prepare a passport with at least six months left before it expires, the visa application, photos, and the entry and immigration-status records needed for the residence ID. Ask your institution and Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) to confirm the order of the steps.

What This Route Allows
You can stay for the studies and period covered by your approvals, while continuing to meet their conditions.
What This Route Is Not
Admission alone does not give you permission to live in Ethiopia. Student permission does not give you unrestricted work rights or guarantee a graduate work visa, permanent residence, or citizenship.
Next Steps
- Confirm your place and ask the institution for its visa and residence-ID instructions.
- Gather tuition or scholarship evidence, financial support, personal records, and the required ministry letter.
- Complete the visa and residence-ID applications, and renew before your permission expires.
