The spouse route will acquire a new residence timetable
After commencement and before 1 January 2030, a spouse or former spouse would need three years of lawful presence during the preceding five years. From 1 January 2030, those three years would need to be accumulated while holding a permanent-residence permit. The enacted amendment is not operative until the Minister commences it.
Timing: The Immigration (Amendment) Act 2026 and Citizenship of Fiji (Amendment) Act 2026 were enacted on 28 May 2026. Each comes into force on a date or dates appointed by the responsible Minister in the Gazette. No commencement notice for these provisions has been identified.
Current pathway rules still apply.
What This Route Allows
Approval and completion of the registration process confer Fijian citizenship. Fiji permits dual citizenship under its current framework.
What This Route Is Not
Marriage alone does not confer citizenship automatically, and a partner relationship without legal marriage does not fit this registration category.
Next Steps
- Request an immigration-status search and qualifying-day calculation.
- Obtain proof of the spouse's Fiji citizenship and the marriage history.
- Collect identity, police, residence, and character records.
- File the citizenship-registration application and complete the oath process.
