Summary
France's Talent researcher route is for people coming to France to conduct research or provide university-level teaching with a French research or higher-education host.
The key document is a hosting agreement from an approved public or private body with a research or higher-education mission. France also expects a degree at least equivalent to a master's degree.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are not French or using EU/EEA/Swiss free-movement rights.
- You have a master's-level degree or higher, or an equivalent academic profile.
- You are coming to France for research or university-level teaching.
- An approved French research or higher-education body will host you.
- You can obtain the required hosting agreement.
- You meet the standard identity, residence, insurance, and public-order checks.
What This Route Allows
The Talent researcher card can allow a research or teaching stay in France. Its validity is generally tied to the hosting agreement and can run up to four years.
Eligible family members may be able to use the accompanying Talent family route, which can be more flexible than ordinary family reunification.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a route for informal independent research or general job search. The French host and hosting agreement are central.
It is also separate from the post-study job search/company creation card, which may become relevant after a research stay ends.
Next Steps
- Confirm the French host institution and whether it is approved for hosting agreements.
- Confirm that your degree and research or teaching plan fit the Talent researcher requirements.
- Obtain or negotiate the hosting agreement.
- Gather passport, degree, host, project, insurance, and civil-status documents.
- Apply through the France-Visas or prefecture process that matches where you are applying from.
