Hungary Family Residence
At a glance
Certain relatives can apply to join a Hungarian citizen or an eligible resident in Hungary. The resident's exact permit matters: some permits allow a spouse or children to join them, while others do not.
- Family covered
- Spouse or recognized partner, minor children, and certain dependent relatives
- Sponsor
- A Hungarian citizen or holder of a residence category that permits family reunification
- Excluded permits
- Student, White Card, seasonal, and several ordinary work permits cannot normally sponsor family
Summary
Hungarian family reunification allows certain relatives to join a citizen or eligible resident, but the sponsor's permit can determine whether the option is available. A Hungarian citizen or eligible resident may support specified spouses, partners, children and dependent relatives, while several temporary categories do not normally permit ordinary family sponsorship. Student, White Card and many ordinary work permissions are among the exclusions.
Once the sponsor's basis is established, the family must document the relationship and the required financial support, housing and health coverage. A guest self-employed sponsor also faces a prior-residence condition. These restrictions should be checked before planning a simultaneous household move.
Eligibility
This route includes a spouse or recognized partner, minor children, and certain other qualifying dependent relatives. A parent of a minor Hungarian citizen can qualify where the legal custody and shared-household conditions are met.
The sponsor must be a Hungarian citizen or hold a status that permits reunification. Ordinary employment and guest-worker permits, seasonal work, White Cards, and student or post-study job-search permits cannot normally sponsor family. A guest self-employed sponsor must meet the prior-residence condition.
The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Hungary.
More about this route
Several temporary categories exclude ordinary family sponsorship, including student permission and the White Card for remote work. For a household, choosing the main applicant’s route can therefore decide whether the family can use one connected plan or whether another member needs an independent basis for residence.
-
Check the sponsor's status Confirm citizenship or a residence category that permits reunification.
-
Relationship and waiting rules Match the eligible relative and any required prior residence.
-
Prepare household evidence Document support, housing, insurance, and civil status.
White Cards, student permits, and several work categories normally exclude ordinary family sponsorship.
What This Route Allows
A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Hungary. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.
What This Route Is Not
The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.
Next Steps
The sponsor’s current or proposed Hungarian permit needs to allow family reunification before the household prepares an application. If it does, the next questions concern the qualifying relationship and any waiting condition, followed by the support, housing, and insurance evidence. A legally resident relative on an excluded permit does not provide the same sponsorship basis.
