Summary

Iceland allows some non-EEA graduates to remain after completing a university degree in Iceland so they can look for work based on their qualifications. Legally, this is a special renewal of the student's residence permit. It is meant to bridge the period between an Icelandic degree and a residence permit for work requiring expert knowledge.

The current maximum is 18 months after graduation. This is a new limit: rules effective July 8, 2026 shortened the previously advertised maximum of three years. A person relying on older material should use the current 18-month rule.

The route is only for someone who completed a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree at an Icelandic university. It is not a general Icelandic graduate visa for people who studied in another country, and it is not available merely because a person attended a short course or diploma program.

The published 2026 minimum support figure is ISK 259,951 per month for one person. The published figures are ISK 415,922 per month for a married couple and ISK 129,976 more for each additional adult family member. Check the live requirements when filing because these amounts are adjusted.

The 18 months is a maximum, not an automatic grant in every case. The actual period can be limited by the decision, the documents, or the period already used after graduation. A graduate should confirm with the Directorate how it calculates the available period in their circumstances, especially if graduation occurred before the July 2026 change or the student permit is close to expiring.

There is a different, narrower rule for a person who completed an Icelandic doctorate and is already on a residence permit for work requiring expert knowledge: that specialist permit can be renewed for up to 12 months to seek another expert job. That is not the same application as this student-permit extension.

What This Route Allows

If approved, the extension lets the graduate remain legally in Iceland while looking for employment based on the completed Icelandic degree. It can last for up to 18 months after graduation.

Under the current student work rules, a graduate holding this employment-search extension may work more than the ordinary student limit of 60% of full time. The general student-rights page expressly lists a graduate residing in Iceland while seeking employment based on specialist qualifications as an exception to the 60% ceiling. This does not remove the need to move into the correct work-and-residence category when the graduate secures a qualifying long-term position.

The practical destination is usually the expert-knowledge route. That route normally requires a specific job with a specific employer, a temporary work permit, and expertise that is essential to the employer and based on recognized university, industrial, artistic or technical training. Finding any job does not necessarily establish that the specialist route fits.

The application is treated as a student residence-permit renewal, for which the current published fee is ISK 70,000. A timely renewal can preserve lawful status while the Directorate processes the application, but applicants should follow the official instructions rather than assume that a late or incomplete filing provides protection.

What This Route Is Not

This is not an open-ended job-seeker visa and it does not guarantee a work-based permit. It provides time to search; the later work application has its own employer, contract, qualification, wage, work-permit and residence requirements.

It is not for a degree earned outside Iceland, an Icelandic diploma that is not a bachelor's, master's or doctorate, an unfinished program, or attendance without graduation. The completion requirement is substantive.

It is also not automatically a route to permanent residence. Student residence is generally not a qualifying permanent-residence basis. Iceland has a limited former-student calculation under which at least two years of student residence may be combined with at least two later years on a permit that does qualify, for at least four years in total. The graduate still must obtain and maintain that later permit and meet all permanent-residence conditions.

Finally, do not confuse this with the separate one-year search period that may follow loss of an expert-knowledge job, the six-month period that may follow loss of a shortage-labor job, or the up-to-12-month extension for an Icelandic doctorate holder already on an expert work permit. Each rule begins from a different status.

Next Steps

  1. Obtain an official degree-completion or graduation record from the Icelandic university. Confirm that the award is a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree.
  2. Check the expiry date on the current student permit immediately. Use the digital residence-permit renewal process and file before the permit expires.
  3. Ask the Directorate of Immigration how much of the 18-month maximum remains if the degree was completed some time ago or the case crosses the July 8, 2026 rule change.

  5. Target roles that can realistically meet the expert-knowledge rules. Keep degree records, professional credentials, job descriptions and employer evidence that show why the knowledge is essential.
  6. Once a qualifying job is secured, have the employer start the residence-and-work permit process promptly. Do not wait until the 18-month search period is about to end.
