Summary
Italy's self-employment visa is for people who will carry out an independent professional, business, company-officer, or artistic activity in Italy.
The route is document-heavy. Depending on the category, Italy may ask for professional licensing or authorization, Chamber of Commerce reference parameters, income evidence, suitable lodging, and a nulla osta from the competent Questura.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are not an Italian, EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen.
- You plan to work for yourself or carry out a qualifying independent activity in Italy.
- Your activity fits a recognized self-employment category.
- You can document funds, income, lodging, and any required license or professional approval.
- You can obtain the required nulla osta and consular visa documents.
What This Route Allows
This route can allow you to live in Italy while carrying out the approved self-employed activity. It can support renewal and later long-term-residence planning if the activity remains lawful and viable.
What This Route Is Not
This is not the same as Italy's digital nomad visa. If your plan is mainly remote work for employers or clients outside Italy, the digital nomad route may be a better fit.
It is also not a passive-residence route. Italy will expect a real Italian-based activity or qualifying independent role.
Next Steps
- Define the activity you would perform in Italy.
- Confirm which self-employment category fits the activity.
- Check whether licensing, professional registration, or Chamber of Commerce evidence is required.
- Prepare funds, income, lodging, and business or professional evidence.
- Confirm the nulla osta and consular filing sequence for your residence jurisdiction.
