Japan Dependent Family Residence

Japan Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

A financially dependent spouse or child may be able to join a foreign resident in Japan. The resident must hold a status that allows dependents, and paid work needs separate permission.

Summary

If your spouse or parent is a foreign resident in Japan, you may be able to live with them under Dependent status. You must depend on them financially, and their own immigration status must allow family members to join.

Each relative needs a separate application. The family status does not automatically let you take paid work.

Eligibility

You must be the resident’s spouse or child and have evidence of both the legal relationship and financial support. This category does not generally cover parents, siblings, fiancés, or unmarried partners.

Your family member must hold an eligible status, such as certain professional-work, cultural-activity, or student permissions. Technical Intern Training and Specified Skilled Worker 1 do not provide the same family-sponsorship option. Check the exact status, not just whether they have a “work visa.”

Prepare the relationship records, the resident’s immigration and work or study documents, and proof of support. The application normally uses a Certificate of Eligibility—an immigration document supporting the later visa application. It does not guarantee a visa; entry and residence-card steps still follow separately.

Joining a foreign resident in Japan
  1. Check the resident’s status Confirm that it allows a financially dependent spouse or child to join.
  2. Prepare family and support records Document the relationship, residence status, and financial support.
  3. Apply for your own permission Complete the visa and residence steps; check paid work separately.

This is not the Japanese-citizen spouse category. Family permission does not automatically allow employment.

What This Route Allows

Approval lets you live with your family member for the granted period. Read your own permit for its dates and check renewal rules if the supporting resident’s status or your circumstances change.

Paid work needs separate permission for activities outside Dependent status and must stay within that permission’s limits.

What This Route Is Not

This is different from the route for a Japanese citizen’s spouse. It does not automatically allow a full-time job.

Permission for a short visit is different from permission to live together. Approval for one relative does not cover the whole family.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm that your family member’s exact immigration status allows a spouse or child to join.
  2. Gather relationship records, residence and work or study documents, and proof of financial support.
  3. Check the Certificate of Eligibility, visa, translation, certification, and local registration requirements for your application.
  4. Read your permission and arrange separate work approval before accepting paid work.
