Lithuania Family Residence

Lithuania Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

You may be able to join a family member in Lithuania. The rules depend on your relationship and their citizenship or residence permit. Spouses, children, and dependent parents need different documents, and some temporary residents must wait before bringing family.

Summary

Lithuania’s family-reunification routes let eligible relatives join a sponsor whose status and residence history meet the conditions for bringing them. Ordinary temporary residents and specialized permit holders can face different conditions. Nationality-based restrictions and where an application may be submitted still need a separate check.

Eligibility

Eligible cases include a spouse or registered partner, qualifying children, and certain dependent parents or other close relatives. The relationship, ages, dependence, and sponsor status must fit a specific Lithuanian family category.

Many temporary-resident sponsors need two years of legal residence, a permit valid for at least one year, and a reasonable prospect of permanent residence. Exemptions include qualifying highly skilled workers, researchers, and other specified categories.

The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Lithuania.

Lithuania restricts acceptance of residence applications from Russian citizens, including dual citizens. Existing lawful status or a permitted exception must allow the application to be accepted; another passport alone does not remove the restriction.

More about this route

Some highly skilled workers, researchers, and other specified sponsors have exceptions to the ordinary conditions. Identifying the permit involved can therefore change the family’s timetable. Nationality and filing-location restrictions also remain relevant, including restrictions affecting Russian citizens with more than one nationality.

The sponsor category can change the family's timetable
  1. Check your family member's status and relationship Match the exact permit and family connection to a Lithuanian category.
  2. Check the ordinary conditions or exemption Review the residence period, permit validity, and any applicable highly skilled or research exception.
  3. Prepare the family file Document age, dependency, support, housing, coverage, and birth, marriage, and other family records as required.

Nationality and filing-location restrictions remain separate checks. A family connection does not waive them.

What This Route Allows

A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Lithuania. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.

What This Route Is Not

The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.

Next Steps

The sponsor’s status determines whether the ordinary residence period applies or an exemption is available. That affects the timing of a family move for a highly skilled worker, researcher, or another eligible sponsor. The applicant’s relationship and any dependence must then be documented, with nationality and application-location restrictions considered separately.
