A minor may also acquire Luxembourgish nationality when a parent later becomes Luxembourgish by operation of law, naturalization, option or reclamation, subject to the precise rule that applies to that parent and child. Adoption and birth in Luxembourg have separate automatic-nationality rules.

Useful evidence includes full birth certificates, parentage or adoption records, the parent's Luxembourg certificate of nationality, and records of any name, marriage or nationality changes. Foreign documents may need authentication and a translation into Luxembourgish, French, German or English.

What This Route Allows

Once the status is documented, the person has Luxembourgish citizenship rather than a residence permit. They can seek Luxembourg identity and passport documents and exercise EU citizenship rights. Luxembourg law generally permits more than one nationality, although another country's law may treat dual nationality differently.

A certificate of nationality confirms that, to the issuing authority's knowledge, the named person is Luxembourgish and has not lost that status.

What This Route Is Not

Having any Luxembourgish ancestor is not enough for automatic citizenship. The nationality must reach the applicant through a qualifying parent at the legally relevant time. If it did not pass from a parent or grandparent, the adult option procedure may instead be relevant.

This is also not the former reclamation program for descendants of a person who was Luxembourgish on 1 January 1900; that program had filing deadlines that have now passed.
