- Type
- Citizenship by option
- Family link
- Spouse of a Luxembourgish citizen
- Core requirements
- Marriage, language, civic integration, and good character
- What to know
- Couples abroad usually need a three-year marriage history
Summary
Luxembourg nationality by option can be available to the spouse of a Luxembourgish citizen.
This is not automatic citizenship by marriage. The applicant still needs to use the option procedure and usually needs to complete language and civic-integration requirements. Couples living abroad generally need to show that the marriage has lasted long enough.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are at least 18.
- You are married to a Luxembourgish citizen.
- You live in Luxembourg, or if you live abroad, the marriage has generally lasted at least three years.
- You can complete the Luxembourgish language evaluation.
- You complete the Living Together in Luxembourg civic course or test.
- You can satisfy the good-character and document requirements.
What This Route Allows
If approved, the option declaration leads to Luxembourgish citizenship. It can be a more direct route than ordinary naturalization for a spouse who fits the requirements.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a residence permit and not an automatic status. It also does not replace the need to document the marriage, the spouse's Luxembourgish nationality, and the applicant's eligibility.
Next Steps
- Confirm your spouse's Luxembourgish nationality and gather proof.
- Confirm whether you are applying from Luxembourg or abroad.
- If abroad, check the marriage-duration rule.
- Prepare for the language and civic-integration requirements.
- Gather marriage, identity, residence, and background records.
