Summary

Reclamation is primarily the route for an adult who personally held Luxembourgish nationality and later lost it. It can restore nationality without the residence, language and civic requirements of ordinary naturalization.

The same official page still describes a special route for direct descendants of an ancestor who was Luxembourgish on 1 January 1900, but that program is no longer open to a new claimant because its statutory filing deadlines have passed.

Eligibility

The continuing core route covers adults who formerly held Luxembourgish nationality. It also addresses women who lost Luxembourgish nationality without expressly asking to do so because they acquired their husband's nationality through marriage or because their husband acquired another nationality.

The applicant must prove the former status and loss and meet the good-repute requirement. Fraud, concealment and specified serious convictions can prevent reclamation. The file normally includes full identity and civil-status records, proof of the former Luxembourgish nationality and its loss, a biographical questionnaire, and criminal-record certificates for relevant nationalities and countries of adult residence during the preceding 15 years.

For the separate 1900-ancestor program, a descendant had to request the Ministry of Justice's descent certificate by 31 December 2018 and personally sign the reclamation declaration by 31 December 2025. As of 15 August 2026, a person who missed either deadline cannot start that special procedure.

What This Route Allows

If the Minister raises no objection, nationality is reclaimed four months after the Ministry receives the declaration. It takes effect for the future. The procedure itself is free, although obtaining and translating records may cost money.

Restored Luxembourgish nationality brings Luxembourg and EU citizenship rights and does not require ongoing residence in Luxembourg.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a new open-ended descent program. A distant Luxembourgish ancestor does not now create a fresh reclamation claim merely because the family line can be documented.

Someone who never personally held Luxembourgish nationality should instead check automatic filiation, close-family option, or ordinary naturalization.
