Summary

Luxembourg has a specific residence and work route for a non-EU athlete or sports instructor or coach employed by an approved Luxembourg sports federation or an affiliated club for more than 3 months.

The permit is limited to that sports activity. It is not a general coaching, freelance or open work permit.

The applicant needs:

The adult unskilled social minimum wage is €2,771.33 gross per month from 1 June 2026. Because it is indexed, the figure in force when applying and renewing must be checked. A higher skilled or collective-agreement rate may apply to the actual job.

Temporary authorization normally must be obtained before travel. After arrival, the worker declares arrival within 3 days, completes the medical check and applies for the residence card within 3 months. Guichet.lu lists an €80 fee. The federation or club must verify the authorization and notify the start of employment to the Ministry within 3 working days.

What This Route Allows

The card authorizes the sports or instructor activity stated in the application. It is valid for at most one year and can be renewed in one-year periods while the qualifying contract, salary and other conditions continue.

Eligible family members may use ordinary family reunification. After 5 years of qualifying lawful and uninterrupted residence, the holder may apply for EU long-term resident status if all of that route's conditions are met.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a permit for casual amateur participation, independent coaching, work for an unapproved organization or unrelated employment. A contract below the applicable full-time wage floor does not qualify.

The permit is not permanent residence or citizenship, and changing the activity or employment model can require a different authorization.
