Summary
Moldova’s family residence allows eligible relatives to join a citizen or resident whose status permits sponsorship. The applicant must prove the accepted spouse or child relationship and the sponsor’s status. Citizen-family cases can require local registration of family records; unmarried partnerships follow a separate checklist rather than automatically being treated as marriage.
Eligibility
This pathway covers a spouse or eligible child joining a Moldovan citizen or a foreign national with a residence status that permits family reunification. The relationship must be supported by accepted birth, marriage, and other family records.
The sponsor must prove Moldovan citizenship or qualifying legal residence. Student residence is excluded from the ordinary sponsorship basis in the published guidance; the applicant also needs housing and the applicable support and insurance records.
The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Moldova.
More about this route
Some distinctions affect the process before the move begins. Student residence does not support ordinary sponsorship under the published guidance, and citizen-family cases may need birth, marriage, and other family records registered in Moldova. Unmarried partnerships use a separate checklist rather than being treated as marriages in this pathway.
-
Qualifying sponsor Establish Moldovan citizenship or a residence category allowing family sponsorship.
-
Accepted relationship Document the spouse or eligible child using the correct checklist.
-
Proof of support and housing Provide housing and applicable support and insurance records.
Student residence is excluded from ordinary sponsorship; unmarried partnerships use their own checklist.
Family applications will be covered by the new law
Family applications will be covered by the new law
Family reunification is included in the replacement residence framework. The transition rules and final filing guidance will matter to households applying around June 2027.
Timing: The main residence framework begins June 1, 2027. A June 2026 consultation concerned implementing procedures; that consultation is not itself the start of the new residence system.
What This Route Allows
A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Moldova. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.
What This Route Is Not
The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.
Next Steps
A citizen sponsor and a resident sponsor need different status evidence, so the appropriate checklist should be identified first. The family can then arrange the civil-record registration or authentication required for the case. An unmarried partnership follows its own checklist and should not be presented as a marriage application.
