Nigeria Residence for Former Citizens

Nigeria Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

If you were a Nigerian citizen by birth and formally gave up that citizenship, you can apply for residence through the N2A category. You need proof that the renunciation was completed. This may let you return to live in Nigeria without restoring citizenship.

Previous status
Nigerian citizenship by birth
Required event
A completed formal renunciation, supported by its certificate
Other evidence
Certified birth records, foreign passport, clearance, and sufficient funds

Summary

Nigeria's N2A category lets qualifying former citizens seek residence after formally renouncing Nigerian citizenship held by birth. The certificate of renunciation and certified birth and citizenship records establish the basis; living abroad, gaining another passport or allowing an old passport to expire does not establish loss.

The applicant also needs a foreign passport, clearance and sufficient funds. This permission provides residence rather than restored nationality, and NIS lists no employment under the category. Someone who remains Nigerian should examine citizenship documentation instead, not treat renunciation as a step toward residence eligibility.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

You must have previously held Nigerian citizenship by birth, then completed the formal process to give it up. Provide the renunciation certificate, an officially certified birth certificate, and supporting citizenship records.

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) also asks for a valid foreign passport, a photograph, police or security clearance, and evidence of enough money for your stay.

Living abroad, acquiring another passport, or letting a Nigerian passport expire does not prove that citizenship ended. If you are still Nigerian, look into documenting that citizenship instead. This published category does not cover someone whose former Nigerian citizenship was only through registration or naturalization.

Applying to return after a completed renunciation
  1. Confirm your former citizenship and its loss A foreign passport alone does not prove Nigerian citizenship ended.
  2. Prepare the renunciation and personal records Use the current N2A checklist from NIS or the Nigerian mission.
  3. Apply and review the residence conditions Check any separate permission for family members or intended work.

This category is for former citizens by birth who have already given up citizenship; it does not restore it.

What This Route Allows

NIS describes residence with no fixed end date for an approved N2A application. Accompanying family members are not automatically covered; each needs the appropriate family application.

What This Route Is Not

This is residence permission, not restoration of citizenship or eligibility for a Nigerian passport. NIS lists no employment under this category, so obtain confirmation of the separate permission needed before working.

This route is for someone who has already renounced citizenship. Giving up citizenship should not be treated as a step to qualify for it, and it is not necessary to explore citizenship-by-birth information.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm whether you actually lost Nigerian citizenship and whether it was held by birth.
  2. Gather the completed renunciation, certified birth, and supporting status records.
  3. Obtain the current N2A checklist and application instructions from NIS or the Nigerian embassy or consulate.
  4. Check the issued residence conditions and ask separately about work plans or accompanying family.
