Nigeria Residence for Spouses

Nigeria Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

Nigeria's N1A residence category lets a qualifying foreign spouse seek to live with a Nigerian citizen. The marriage, sponsor's identity, and stable home must be supported by accepted evidence.

Family connection
A current marriage to a Nigerian citizen
Marriage evidence
A recognized certificate certified as the issuing office requires
Other records
Nigerian spouse’s identity, a stable home, your passport, photograph, and police clearance

Summary

If you are currently married to a Nigerian citizen, you can apply to live together in Nigeria through the N1A spouse residence category. You need a recognized marriage, your spouse’s Nigerian identity documents, and evidence of a stable home in Nigeria. Marriage alone does not issue the permit.

This is separate from Special Immigrant Status and citizenship registration through marriage. The published N1A checklist does not set a minimum marriage duration.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Provide a current marriage certificate certified in the way the issuing office accepts. Ask how it verifies foreign marriage records before preparing them.

You also need your Nigerian spouse’s passport or national identification and evidence of a stable Nigerian address, such as a lease or utility bill. Prepare your own passport with at least six months’ validity, a photograph, and police clearance.

Applying to live in Nigeria with your citizen spouse
  1. Confirm the marriage and spouse’s citizenship Ask which certification is needed for the marriage record.
  2. Prepare home and personal documents Confirm the N1A application process and how it differs from SIS.
  3. Apply and check the issued residence conditions Verify the duration, renewal, travel, and work restrictions.

Published sources differ on the length of stay; use the conditions confirmed in your approval.

What This Route Allows

The April 2026 Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) service guide and the N1A category page describe four years of residence with multiple entry. The general NIS FAQ instead describes residence with no fixed end date. Because the published guidance differs, confirm the duration, renewal, and travel conditions in your actual approval.

What This Route Is Not

NIS lists no employment under N1A. Marriage does not automatically give work permission, so ask what separate authorization a job or business would need.

The permit does not grant citizenship or a Nigerian passport. It also does not replace the application and document checks.

Next Steps

  1. Gather the accepted marriage certificate, your spouse’s identity and citizenship evidence, and Nigerian address records.
  2. Ask NIS or the Nigerian embassy or consulate which application process to use and how N1A differs from SIS.
  3. Submit the requested records and fees and complete any required in-person identity checks.
  4. Check the actual approved duration, renewal requirements, travel conditions, and work restrictions.
