Nicaragua Self-Employed Residence
At a glance
If you will carry out lawful independent work or run a business in Nicaragua, you can apply for temporary residence for that activity. You must explain the actual work and provide the business, tax, professional, and financial records it requires. Continuing an overseas remote job does not automatically qualify.

Summary
Independent workers can seek residence in Nicaragua to provide lawful local services or operate a business. The file must explain that lawful activity and provide the registration, tax, professional and financial evidence relevant to it, rather than merely showing enough personal money to live.
An overseas remote job does not automatically establish this basis. The applicant must also meet DGME's personal and document requirements, including any foreign-record authentication and translation. Permission is temporary and depends on maintaining the qualifying activity.
Eligibility
The activity must be real and lawful, with records explaining the services or business and how it operates in Nicaragua. A plan to continue an overseas remote job is not automatically accepted under this category.
Business registration, tax records, professional permission, and proof of support may be required for the particular activity. The application needs evidence appropriate to your work, rather than a general statement that you can support yourself.
DGME, Nicaragua’s immigration authority, must accept your passport, background records, and evidence for the category. Foreign documents may need authentication and Spanish translation. The current checklist and entry requirements should be confirmed with DGME or the responsible Nicaraguan consulate.
-
Define the lawful local activity Describe the services or business and how it operates in Nicaragua.
-
Prepare activity-specific evidence Confirm the needed business registration, tax records, licensing, and support documents.
-
Complete the DGME residence process Use accepted personal and authenticated foreign records for the category.
A general freelancer label or an overseas remote job does not automatically establish this residence basis.
What This Route Allows
The permission allows residence for the independent activity accepted in the application. Temporary residence can be issued for three months to one year, with renewal subject to the continuing basis and other requirements.
The immigration approval does not replace the business or professional permissions required for the activity itself. Both need to cover the work the applicant actually intends to perform.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a dedicated digital-nomad visa or a general exemption from business, tax, or professional rules.
Next Steps
- Describe the work or business you intend to carry out to DGME and the relevant licensing authority.
- Confirm the registration, tax, professional, and support records needed for that activity.
- Prepare your personal documents and apply for residence covering that work.
- Complete any separate business or professional permissions before starting.
