Summary
New Zealand's USA Working Holiday Visa lets eligible U.S. citizens spend a temporary period in New Zealand and work during the stay. It is designed for a holiday first, with work allowed to help support the trip.
This route is for U.S. citizens aged 18 to 30 who normally live in the United States. It does not require a job offer, but it is not a direct permanent-residence route.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are a U.S. citizen aged 18 to 30.
- You normally live in the United States.
- You have not already been granted a New Zealand working-holiday visa.
- You can show at least NZD 4,200 for living expenses.
- You have medical insurance for the length of the stay.
- You have a ticket out of New Zealand, or enough additional funds to buy one.
- You meet New Zealand's health, character, and genuine-intentions requirements.
What This Route Allows
This visa can let you holiday in New Zealand for up to 12 months, work in temporary jobs, study or train for up to 6 months, and travel in and out of New Zealand while the visa is valid.
U.S. working-holiday holders may be able to apply for a short extension if they complete qualifying horticulture or viticulture work in New Zealand.
What This Route Is Not
- A permanent residence route.
- A visa for taking a permanent job.
- A route for bringing a partner or child as a dependent.
- A repeatable route if you have already been granted a New Zealand working-holiday visa.
Some people later qualify separately for an employer, study, skilled-work, partner, or residence pathway, but this visa does not itself create that outcome.
Next Steps
- Confirm that you are a U.S. citizen aged 18 to 30.
- Confirm that you normally live in the United States.
- Gather passport, funds, insurance, onward-travel, health, and character documents.
- Apply online through Immigration New Zealand.
- Plan the next route separately if your goal is to stay in New Zealand after the working holiday.
