Panama Residence for Ordinary Employees

Panama Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

A private company in Panama can support your residence application if it can hire you within the ordinary 10% limit on foreign staff. The migration checklist requires pay of at least PAB 850 a month, an endorsed contract, employer records, and a work permit.

Summary

Panama’s ordinary employee residence category lets an overseas worker settle there for a qualifying local job. The position must fit the employer’s foreign-staff quota and the applicable labor conditions. This route is available independently of Friendly Nations citizenship. Residence first has a two-year provisional stage; changing to permanent residence afterward requires another application rather than happening automatically.

Employment compliance comes before the later permanent-residence stage
  1. Confirm the employer’s available quota Check the ordinary foreign-staff category, salary, and any professional restrictions.
  2. Coordinate residence and work permission Prepare the endorsed contract, employer records, and MITRADEL requirements.
  3. Assess the separate permanent-residence application After the provisional stage Prepare it as the qualifying provisional period ends.

The two-year provisional grant does not automatically become permanent residence. Obtain permission before starting work.

Eligibility

A qualifying employer and job

The employer must be a genuine private-sector business in Panama and provide a letter stating your position and pay. This is local employment, not a foreign remote-work arrangement or permission to enter and look for a job.

Ask the employer to confirm the available quota and the applicable staffing and payroll calculations with the Ministry of Labor and Workforce Development, known as MITRADEL. This pathway covers ordinary personnel. Different categories can apply to technical or specialist staff, and the permit does not override occupations reserved to Panamanians or professional licensing requirements.

Pay and employer participation

The migration minimum is PAB 850 monthly. A higher wage required for the particular role still applies. The employer must be able to document the salary and support the migration and labor applications, rather than simply issue an informal offer.

The published checklist requires a MITRADEL-endorsed contract, work permit, social-security affiliation, the company’s registration and operating records, and its tax-clearance evidence. The applicant also supplies the common passport, background, health, application, and payment documents. Foreign records may require authentication and Spanish translation.

Accompanying family

Dependent applications require relationship and support records, including a responsibility letter and address evidence. Adult dependents face additional conditions; confirm these before assuming a spouse or child will receive the same status or work rights.

What This Route Allows

An approved applicant receives two-year provisional residence connected to the qualifying employment. Actual work must be covered by the separate MITRADEL authorization. Submitting a residence application does not let you start work.

After the provisional period, the permanent-residence application requires renewed evidence of the category’s requirements, with the document exceptions stated in the official checklist. It is not an automatic conversion on the second anniversary.

What This Route Is Not

It is not restricted to the Friendly Nations citizenship list. A listed citizen may have more than one route to compare, but nationality does not remove the employment and labor-permit requirements.

It is not an open work permit, a specialist-staff route, or a guarantee that an employer can hire another foreign worker. An attractive offer can still fail if the quota, occupation, wage, or supporting business records do not fit.

Next Steps

  1. Ask the employer to confirm the job category, available quota, salary, and any professional restrictions.
  2. Coordinate the residence and MITRADEL work-permit processes, including the endorsed contract and social-security evidence.
  3. Collect the applicant and company records listed in the current official checklist, plus dependent documents where needed.
  4. Obtain the required permission before starting work and check the consequences before changing employers or roles.
  5. Prepare the separate permanent-residence application as the two-year provisional period ends.
