Summary

Since 19 May 2026, a person adopted by a Portuguese citizen acquires Portuguese nationality by making a declaration. It is no longer described in the Nationality Law as automatic nationality on adoption.

The adoption must be legally valid for Portuguese purposes. A foreign adoption may first need recognition or registration in Portugal.

What This Route Allows

After the declaration is accepted and registered, you become a Portuguese citizen and therefore an EU citizen, with EU free-movement rights. The nationality result is separate from any residence status held before the application.

What This Route Is Not

This is not ordinary descent through a biological parent and not a residence visa. It also does not make every foreign adoption immediately usable: recognition of the adoption may be a necessary first step.
