Portuguese citizenship by descent is mainly for people with a Portuguese parent or grandparent. Parent cases are usually more direct; grandparent cases usually require proof of the family line and a recognized connection to Portugal.

What This Route Allows

This route can allow a qualifying person to become a Portuguese citizen. Portuguese citizenship can also make a person an EU citizen, with the rights that come with EU citizenship.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a broad route for anyone with any Portuguese ancestor. It also is not a residence visa. If you do not qualify for citizenship by descent, Portugal may still have residence routes based on work, study, family, income, business, or nationality.
