Portuguese Citizenship by Marriage

Summary

A spouse or legally recognized unmarried partner of a Portuguese citizen may apply for Portuguese nationality after more than three years of marriage or partnership. Marriage and unmarried-partner cases use different proof, but both depend on the relationship with a Portuguese citizen.

This is a nationality pathway, not just a residence pathway.

Eligibility

You may be a fit if:

• You are married to a Portuguese citizen, or you live in a legally recognized unmarried partnership with a Portuguese citizen.
• The marriage or partnership has lasted more than three years.
• The relationship is still in place when the declaration is made.
• You can document the marriage or partnership.
• No opposition ground blocks the acquisition.

De facto union cases can require court recognition before the nationality declaration. Marriage cases usually turn first on the marriage record and the Portuguese spouse's nationality.

What This Route Allows

If approved, this route grants Portuguese nationality. Portuguese citizens are also EU citizens, so the result can carry EU free-movement rights.

What This Route Is Not

This is not automatic citizenship on marriage. Portugal still requires a nationality declaration, relationship records, and review of opposition grounds. A spouse or partner who is only a Portuguese resident, but not a Portuguese citizen, does not create this nationality route.
