At a glance

Portugal has limited routes for certain former Portuguese citizens to get nationality back. The clearest case is a person who lost Portuguese nationality through a declaration made when they were a child or otherwise could not legally decide for themselves; a separate discretionary route may help some people who lost Portuguese nationality and never acquired another.

Summary

Portuguese citizenship reacquisition is for people who previously held Portuguese nationality and are not Portuguese today. The clearest declaration route covers someone who lost Portuguese nationality because of a declaration made when they were a child or otherwise could not legally decide for themselves. A separate discretionary naturalization route can cover some people who lost Portuguese nationality, never acquired another nationality, and still have an effective connection to Portugal.

This is a narrow former-citizen route. It should not be confused with Portuguese citizenship by descent, birth in Portugal, marriage, adoption, or ordinary naturalization.

Eligibility

You may be a fit if:

What This Route Allows

If approved, this route can restore or reacquire Portuguese nationality. Portuguese nationality also provides EU citizenship.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a general ancestry route and not a first-time residence visa. It is for former Portuguese citizens. If you never held Portuguese nationality, check descent, birth, adoption, marriage, residence-based naturalization, or another Portugal pathway instead.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm whether you previously held Portuguese nationality.
  2. Identify how and when that nationality was lost.
  3. Collect Portuguese civil and nationality records.
  4. Gather records showing your current identity and, where relevant, ongoing ties to Portugal.
  5. Review the exact case with a Portuguese nationality professional before filing.
