Summary
Portugal has a special naturalization route for people who legally live in Portugal and have a Portuguese great-grandparent. It generally requires at least five years of legal residence in Portugal.
This is not the same as the from-abroad Portuguese citizenship-by-descent route for parents and grandparents. It is a residence-based route for a more distant family connection.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are not already Portuguese.
- You legally live in Portugal.
- You have legally lived in Portugal for at least five years.
- You have a Portuguese great-grandparent.
- You can document the family line and show that your great-grandparent was Portuguese.
- You can meet the remaining naturalization checks, including language, civic, record, security, and sanctions requirements.
What This Route Allows
If approved, this route grants Portuguese nationality by special naturalization. Portuguese nationality also provides EU citizenship.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a shortcut for every person with older Portuguese ancestry. If your Portuguese ancestor was a parent or grandparent, the standard Portuguese citizenship-by-descent route may be more direct. If the ancestor is further back than a great-grandparent, this route may not fit.
Next Steps
- Confirm the exact Portuguese family connection.
- Gather birth, marriage, name-change, and Portuguese records for each generation.
- Count legal residence in Portugal.
- Prepare language, civic, record, and admissibility evidence.
- Review the file before submitting because the route is narrower than ordinary residence-based naturalization.
