Summary
Portugal has an intra-corporate transferee route for certain employees transferred within the same company group. It is aimed at managers, specialists, and trainee employees who are sent to Portugal by an employer group rather than hired on the open Portuguese labor market.
This route can be useful when the worker already has a full-time role abroad and the employer has a Portuguese branch, entity, or linked company that will receive the transfer.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are not already Portuguese.
- You are not relying on EU, EEA, or Swiss free-movement rights.
- You are employed by a company group that can transfer you to Portugal.
- The Portuguese role is with the same company group.
- The role fits a manager, specialist, or trainee category.
- The employer can document the transfer, role, qualifications, and employment relationship.
What This Route Allows
If approved, this route can allow you to live and work in Portugal for the intra-company assignment. It may also help a multinational employer move an existing employee into Portugal without using an ordinary local hiring process.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a route for a brand-new job with an unrelated Portuguese employer. It is also not the same as a digital nomad route, because the work is tied to a Portuguese assignment within the company group.
Next Steps
- Confirm that the Portuguese role is within the same company group as your current employer.
- Identify whether the role is managerial, specialist, or trainee.
- Ask the employer for transfer documents, job description, salary information, and proof of the company relationship.
- Gather identity, background, housing, and health-coverage documents.
- Confirm filing steps with the employer, consulate, and AIMA.
