Summary
Paraguay’s ordinary temporary residence lets you apply to live there for a lawful activity without requiring a specific employer, pension, or investment. You explain what you plan to do and provide the required personal, entry, and background records.
Permission can last up to two years and may be renewed for the same period. During the application, work and travel rights depend on actually receiving the interim residence status, called residente precario.
Eligibility
The application includes a declaration of the intended activity. Employment is one possibility, but the ordinary temporary category is not limited to people with an employer or pension.
The checklist includes accepted identity records, lawful entry and any required visa, birth and relevant civil-status records, the applicable foreign and Paraguayan background documents, and required declarations. Foreign documents normally need authentication and translation.
The application is handled by Paraguay’s migration authority. The interim status called residente precario must actually be issued; planning to apply does not itself authorize work or an extended stay.

What This Route Allows
Temporary residence allows the holder to live in Paraguay for up to two years, with renewal for an equal period. During the application, an actually issued interim status known as residente precario permits work, study, exit, and re-entry for its valid period.
The temporary approval and a later permanent application are separate stages. The latter requires the relevant filing window and evidence of a real financial support, so the temporary card should not be treated as a guarantee of permanent approval.
What This Route Is Not
This is not instant permanent residence, citizenship, or a guarantee that a later permanent application will pass its financial checks.
Next Steps
- Check the Migration Directorate’s current identity, entry, family-status, and background checklist.
- Prepare foreign records with the required authentication and translations, then obtain the local records and declarations.
- Apply and confirm when interim residence has actually been issued before relying on its work or travel rights.
- Check the temporary approval dates. If planning permanent residence, prepare proof of how you support yourself and confirm the later application window.
